Day 1: Puglia's Whitewashed Welcome

The journey begins in Bari, where you’ll collect your vehicle and feel the Adriatic sun welcoming you to Southern Italy. The first day is designed to ease you into the rhythm of the road while packing in Puglia’s greatest hits.

A short drive brings you to Monopoli – a charming fishing port where the old town’s white alleys lead to sudden glimpses of turquoise sea. Park near the harbor and enjoy your first Italian espresso while watching the morning catch come ashore.

From the coast, you’ll head inland to Alberobello. The iconic trulli houses – ancient dry-stone dwellings with conical roofs – create a fairytale landscape that’s uniquely Puglian. While touristy, this UNESCO World Heritage site is unmissable for first-time visitors.

Continuing through the Valle d’Itria, the white hilltop city of Ostuni appears like a vision. Known as the White City, its gleaming historic center rewards those who park below and wander up through the maze of narrow streets.

A brief stop in Brindisi allows you to see the Roman column marking the end of the Appian Way before your final push to Lecce, the Florence of the South. Evening finds you in this baroque masterpiece, where honey-colored stone buildings glow in the sunset. Your accommodation – a converted 16th-century palazzo in the historic center – sets the tone for the nights ahead. Dinner features orecchiette with broccoli rabe and a glass of Primitivo, the perfect end to a perfect first day.

Day 2: The Heel's Spectacular Coast

Today delivers the famous coastal run down the Salento peninsula – a day your driving memories will treasure.

Morning brings you to Otranto, where the cathedral houses an astonishing medieval floor mosaic depicting the tree of life. The Aragonese castle guards the harbor, offering panoramic views of the Adriatic from its ancient walls.

The road south to Santa Maria di Leuca is pure driving joy. Coastal roads hug the cliffside with the sea always in view, leading to the lighthouse where the Adriatic and Ionian seas meet. This is the perfect spot for a leisurely fish lunch at a terrace table, watching the two waters collide.

The afternoon traces the Ionian coast northward. Gallipoli’s old town occupies its own island, connected by a bridge – cross slowly to savor the approach. Porto Cesareo invites a swim in its crystal-clear waters, part of a protected marine area.

You’ll arrive in Taranto as the sun sets over the Mare Piccolo, tired and salt-kissed and ready for dinner in this historic naval city.

Day 3: Into Calabria's Curves

Crossing into Calabria transforms the driving experience. The roads grow wilder, the mountains press closer to the sea, and each curve reveals new drama.

The hilltop fortress of Rocca Imperiale demands a detour. This Swabian castle crowns a medieval village with views stretching to the Ionian Sea – exactly the kind of unplanned discovery that makes road travel unforgettable.

Then inland to Cosenza, where the old town climbs a hill between two rivers. Park near the cathedral and walk up to the Swabian castle through steep, narrow streets that stretch legs and reward with views.

But the afternoon holds the day’s true magic. The road from Cosenza over the mountains to the Tyrrhenian coast twists through chestnut forests and sudden vistas. Each curve reveals more of the sea below until finally, there it is: Tropea, perched on its cliff like a jewel. Your clifftop hotel awaits, and sunset over the Tyrrhenian with a glass of local wine becomes an evening ritual you’ll wish could last forever.

Day 4: Crossing to Sicily

A short morning drive brings you to Villa San Giovanni and the frequent ferry to Messina. Twenty minutes later, you roll off the ramp onto Sicilian soil – a new island, a new chapter.

The northern coast road, the SS113, is a driver’s paradise. It hugs the sea for nearly 200 kilometers, and you’ll want to take it slowly. Tindari demands a stop – the sanctuary perches on a promontory with views down to a lagoon and beach that stop hearts.

Capo d’Orlando offers coffee and people-watching. Santo Stefano di Camastra tempts with its famous ceramics – perhaps a small souvenir that won’t overwhelm your luggage.

Evening brings you to Cefalù, a medieval fishing village that embodies Sicilian charm. Narrow streets, a Norman cathedral, restaurants spilling onto cobblestone – you’ll park the vehicle and not touch it again until morning.

Day 5: Palermo and the Hilltop Gem

The Balio Towers or Torri del Balio, a medieval fortress in Erice

Morning in Cefalù invites exploration. Climb the rock behind the cathedral for the view, then continue west.

Palermo delivers chaos in the best possible way – beautiful, overwhelming, essential. Navigate carefully (those ZTL signs demand attention) and park near the Palazzo dei Normanni. The Cappella Palatina inside glitters with golden mosaics that command silence and awe.

The afternoon road, the SS187 up to Erice, fulfills every driving dream. Hairpin after hairpin climbs through forests to a medieval town on a mountain top. From the castle walls, the Egadi islands float in the sea and the coast of Trapani stretches below.

Descend to Marsala for the night – quieter than Trapani, with its namesake wine waiting to be tasted and appreciated.

Day 6: Ancient Temples and Sicily's Bellybutton

Lombardy Castle in Enna Sicily, Italy

The SS115, the Via del Sale, traces Sicily’s southern coast past salt pans and windmills. A stop in Mazara del Vallo reveals the Dancing Satyr – a Greek bronze pulled from the sea that haunts all who see it.

But Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples is today’s true destination. The Temple of Concordia stands almost perfectly preserved after 2,500 years, golden in the afternoon light. Walking among these Greek columns connects you to civilizations past in ways words cannot capture.

Then turn inland, because Sicily’s heart deserves visiting. The road to Enna rises through wheat fields and rolling hills to the island’s very center. Enna sits on a mountain, and from the Castello di Lombardia, nearly all of Sicily spreads beneath you.

Catania welcomes you at night – black lava stone buildings, a vibrant fish market, and Mount Etna brooding somewhere in the darkness beyond.

Day 7: Taormina's View and the Ride Home

Taormina city and Etna volcano aerial panoramic view

Morning in Catania means the fish market, La Pescheria – a riot of color, noise, and fresh seafood that reminds you why Sicily differs from anywhere else.

Then north to Taormina. The town clings to a cliff high above the sea, and even without visiting the Greek Theatre (though you shouldn’t skip it), the views of Mount Etna from the main corso justify the drive. Lunch on a terrace, watching the volcano smoke gently in the distance, becomes a memory you’ll keep forever.

The afternoon drive back to Messina follows the coast, and the evening ferry catches the sunset behind you. An hour later, you’re back in Tropea, dining at the same clifftop terrace, your Sicilian loop complete and your heart full.

Day 8: A Gentle Farewell

Panoramic view of the ancient town of Matera (Sassi di Matera)

Take the coastal road north, stopping in Pizzo Calabro for their famous tartufo. This chocolate and hazelnut ice cream dessert, invented here, offers the perfect farewell to Italian indulgence.

A small detour can bring you to Matera – not strictly on the route, but unmissable. The Sassi, ancient cave dwellings carved into the cliff, represent a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonder of human ingenuity.

Then the final kilometers to Bari, your vehicle running smoothly beneath you, your mind already replaying the last eight days.

Eight days of curves and coastlines, ancient stones and warm welcomes, the best roads and the best company – just you, your vehicle, and the spirit of the Mezzogiorno.
